Dear Red Hot Mamas Experts,

Can a woman, 62 years old, who has been exercising 1 hour most days, really get rid of belly fat? I attend cardio classes 3-5 days a week. It seems that I am gaining inches in the waist instead of losing them!

Thank you,

B

Dear B,

Where you carry your body fat is important, especially if you carry your weight around your abdomen. This may put you at a higher risk of heart disease, say for instance, than a woman who is pear shaped and carries her weight in her hips. Since you are doing cardio classes so frequently, it may be a good idea for you to discuss with your clinician about doing more weight training. A Minnesota study of 164 women suggested lifting weights reduced belly fat. The women in this study lifted weights for 2 years and these women had only a 7% increase in belly fat, while comparing them to others that had a 21% increase. So, weight lifting may be a consideration if your clinician gives you the green light to do so. Also, stay active, consume less calories and I wish you good luck.

Good Health to You!
