Even though we lived hundreds of miles apart, in different parts of the world, fate brought us together. It was by chance that we met one another, but when we did, we discovered our passions were alike. It is with pleasure that Red Hot Mamas announces our new Ambassador on Black Women's Menopausal Health, Dr. Verna Brooks McKenzie who has joined our Medical Advisory Board. Together, we recognize the health disparities that affect Black women.
Through our grassroots efforts and our educational channels - Red Hot Mamas Menopause Education Programs and website www.redhotmamas.org, we will provide a blueprint for a healthier menopause transition to Black women within the US. We recognize that health disparities exist among this special population of women and these differences sometimes create greater health risks. We hope our pearls of wisdom will provide the framework of guidance and resources to help Black women better prepare for the menopause transition.
We will provide information on both short term and long term consequences of menopause, the facts about hysterectomy, surgical menopause, treatment of menopausal symptoms, and the role of diet, nutrition and exercise programs in health promotion. This is being done in an effort to stop disease before it starts. It is our belief that prevention trumps cure and reduces long-term medical costs. We will also address diseases that are more prevalent among Black women, their causes and top prevention strategies, review important medical tests for Black women before and during menopause, help these women assemble menopause resources, education and support programs. With this knowledge, they can communicate better with their healthcare providers who will assist in making informed decisions which will enable them to lead healthy, productive lives at menopause and beyond.
I hope you share our enthusiasm about Dr. Verna Brooks McKenzie who has been called a "phenomenal woman" by the Jamaica Gleaner and you will welcome her into the Red Hot Mamas community.
