“Our political leaders will know our priorities only if we tell them, again and again, and if those priorities begin to show up in the polls.”
-Peggy Noonan, American Author
Dear Red Hot Mamas,
My daughters lived with a mother who enjoyed politics. In fact, it dominated many of our conversations within our household. It even was one of my aspirations in life to run for office one day. I had that experience and I proudly won three elections, serving six years in public office as a Selectman in my small town in Connecticut.
I’ve always told my daughters that if you don’t vote, you can’t complain at what you get. So, perhaps as a driving force in their lives, or for fear of what I may still say to them, they always call me when they have voted. According to one of my daughters, if was formidable advice. Perhaps, with the other daughter, it was fear of violating Mom’s advice. But, they both thoroughly understand that their vote, as well as every vote counts. It not only changes the community in which you live, but it also changes the country in which we live in. Voting gives us the opportunity to influence the government.
I am really excited for all those who have won their elections. I bestow my heartiest congratulations and best of wishes on their success. I understand completely how their dedication has contributed to their victories. I sincerely hope that each of them will undertake all their responsibilities and will serve the people well.
And, in closing, as I have spoken about to my daughters on numerous occasions, the right to vote is very precious. I hope that in this election you used your right to vote. And, that participating in it was an empowering experience.
Let’s all extend our hand of cooperation and support to forge closer relationships, unity and peace.
Good health to you all,
Karen Giblin
