Dear Red Hot Mamas,

I was always gardening this summer and as a result I got bit by a tick. I went to my doctor because of the rash I had around the bite and sure enough I had Lyme disease. Can you please tell me if this will cause any other problems. I have had enough already with hot flashes due to menopause. Thanks for your attention to this question.

Dear Lauren,

Our outdoor activities sometimes have dangers. Ticks carry diseases, so you were right in consulting with your doctor. A doctor can remove the tick but can’t prevent any illness that might have been transmitted.

Lyme disease is the result of an infection which is spread by deer ticks. Typically, 3-20 days after someone is bitten by an infected tick an oval rash develops. Some people also develop a fever, headache, stiff neck, and backache. And some people may also develop arthritis within 1 to 22 weeks. Less often, heart or neurological problems follow the rash.
