Dear Red Hot Mamas,

Since menopause I have had a lot of discomfort in my genital area. It feels itchy and dry. I even use genital wipes, but it seems this is making matters worse. Can you please provide me with some information which might help me? Thank you.

Barbara

Dear Barbara,

Thank you for writing to Red Hot Mamas. This is a common menopausal symptom often caused by lower levels of estrogen. Loss of estrogen can make your genital area feel drier and become more sensitive. Other things may contribute to the problem. For instance, using perfumed soaps, douches and even panty liners can add to the problem. Some things which might help are: Wearing loose underpants; washing your clothes in fragrance-free detergents; using a mild soap like Dove, Basis or Neutrogena; if you are still using menstrual products or incontinence pad products, choose natural fiber pads; moisturize the genital area – olive oil, coconut oil are low-cost alternatives. Avoid if possible, tummy-control panty hose, bleach and fabric softener in underwear; bubble baths; hot water; products with fragrance; douches; tight spandex clothing. You might consider using an over-the-counter lubricant or vaginal moisturizer but just remember they are not all compatible with latex condoms. Certainly, discuss your concern with your doctor. Your doctor may recommend a prescribed product such as vaginal estrogen or a nonhormonal medication.
