February is an interesting month. First, there’s Groundhog Day which takes place every February 2nd. I’m sure glad that he did not see his shadow this year! This is encouraging news as I look out my window and see piles and piles of snow. Now, I remain positive and look forward to spring being just around the corner. Next, there’s Valentine’s Day when we think with our hearts about romance. This month, keep spreading the love and take care of your heart for American Heart Month. More than 82 million American adults are estimated to have one or more types of cardiovascular disease. That’s one in three people. Make it your mission to fight heart disease and stop the No. 1 killer in America. Heart disease can affect women of any age. That’s why it’s so important to start heart-healthy habits right now. There is another designation for February which is not as well known. February is also International Friendship Month. Many friends from around the world read our newsletter “The Menopause Minute” and I’d like to share my viewpoints with you about friendships.
I cherish the presence of friends in my life. And whether I personally meet you, or meet you through this type of correspondence, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the important role you all play in my life. Friends are important to all of us. Riches don’t lie in material wealth, but lie in having a good friend or friends. They touch our lives in many ways. They help us to build faith in others, formulate trust and companionship. They enrich our lives, touch our hearts, cheer us up, inspire and guide us and truly shape our lives.
I know it may be tough at times for some of us to discuss certain things with family members. So, we turn to the support of friends. Oftentimes our friends can just look us in the eye, without us ever having to say anything, and understand what’s happening. And, even if there is distance separating friends, a true friend will remain in your heart forever. So, this February, I’d like to encourage you to acknowledge your friends and tell them how important they are to you.
In other news, we would like to welcome a new member to the Red Hot Mamas Family, Women’s Hospital in Flowood, MS. In May, this new program site will begin offering menopause education and support for the women in their community. We would also like to thank Carilion New River Valley Medical Center (Christiansburg, VA), Porter Adventist Hospital (Denver, CO), Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare (Salinas, CA) and Shawnee Mission Medical Center (Shawnee Mission, KS) for renewing their Red Hot Mamas Programs. We appreciate your tremendous commitment to providing women and their families with important menopause healthcare information and support. Here’s to another successful year!
