Dear Red Hot Mamas,

Hello to all of you. Happy Summer! Many of you, like me, are feeling “Hot, Hot, Hot! We’ve all looked forward to the good ol’ summertime, outside fun but now we seem to be looking for ways to beat the heat. Our hot flashes can make the summer seem eternal and ruthlessly exacerbate causing very annoying and soggy symptoms.

There are ways to manage hot flashes in the summer, so let’s look at 16 ways to handle hot flashes in the heat of the moment:

  1. Wear all cotton clothes that let your skin breathe.
  2. Keep a cold (non-alcoholic) drink in one hand and a fan in the other.
  3. Carry a spray bottle of water to mist yourself when you feel a hot flash coming on.
  4. Place a cool, damp town around your neck or get a neck cooler that you can put into your freezer and use it if you are going outdoors for any length of time.
  5. A frozen washcloth also can work for a quick cool-down.
  6. Keep your bedroom temperature cool (65 degrees or colder) to prevent night sweats.
  7. Run a fan at your bedside.
  8. Use cotton bed linens and wear light, breathable fabric nightclothes.
  9. Keep a frozen cold pack under your pillow.
  10. If you wake up during the night, get out of bed, sip cool water.
  11. Avoid hot drinks and hot or spicy foods, as well as alcohol, caffeine and cigarette smoking.
  12. Eat small meals. The heat generated by digesting a large meal can sometimes bring on a hot flash.
  13. Reduce stress by practicing self-calming techniques (relaxation breathing, meditation, yoga, massage).
  14. Lose weight – overweight women suffer more hot flashes).
  15. Put a drop of lavender essential oil on your pillow to help you relax and prepare you for a good night’s sleep.
  16. If all else fails, watch videos about Antarctica.

In closing, it is important to discuss symptoms with your doctor. There are options available to treat hot flashes if they are not relieved with lifestyle changes.

Let the sunshine fill your days with happiness and your nights with sweet dreams. Happy summer!

Good Health to You All,
