The American Thyroid Association (ATA) elected, and has announced the new members of its Board of Directors during the ATA’s 84th Annual Meeting, October 29th – November 2nd, in Coronado, California.
Current President-Elect Robert C. Smallridge, M.D., will become the new ATA president, as Hossein Gharib, M.D., completes his term as president.
Antonio Bianco, M.D., Ph.D., will become the new president-elect, and Victor J. Bernet, M.D. accepts the position of secretary/COO-elect. Joining the Board are three new directors: Julie Ann Sosa, M.D., Christine Spitzweg, M.D., and M. Regina Castro, M.D.
Incoming ATA President Bob Smallridge is Professor of Medicine and former Chair, Endocrinology Division, at Mayo Clinic Florida. He is Deputy Director, Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, and the Alfred D. and Audrey M. Petersen Professor in Cancer Research. He is a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army and served as Director, Department of Medicine, at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Professor of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, and Consultant in Endocrinology to the Attending Physician for the U.S. Congress and Supreme Court. Dr. Smallridge has served as Treasurer of the ATA (1988-1993) and, most recently, as Chair of the Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer Guidelines Task Force (2009-2012).
President-elect Tony Bianco is the Charles A. Weaver Professor of Medicine, Executive Vice-Chairman of the Department of Medicine, and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Secretary/COO-elect Vic Bernet is Chair of the Division of Endocrinology at the Mayo Clinic in Florida.
New ATA Director Julie Ann Sosa is Professor of Surgery and Medicine (Oncology) at Duke University, where she serves as the Leader of the Endocrine Neoplasia Diseases Group at the Duke Cancer Institute and the Duke Clinical Research Institute, as well as Chief of Endocrine Surgery and Director of Health Services Research in Surgery. Christine Spitzweg is Professor of Medicine and Endocrinology, Department of Internal Medicine, Ludwigs-Maximilians-University (LMU) Munich, Germany. Regina Castro is Assistant Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Consultant in Endocrinology at Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minnesota.
The ATA promotes thyroid awareness and information through its online Clinical Thyroidology for the Public (distributed free of charge to over 11,000 patients and public subscribers) and extensive, authoritative explanations of thyroid disease and thyroid cancer in both English and Spanish.
