“Understanding menopause is a form of self-advocacy” – Karen Giblin
Dear Red Hot Mamas,
Menopause doesn’t send a memo – here’s how to spot it.
If you’ve been wondering, “Could this be menopause?” you’re not alone-and it’s often not obvious at first. This transition can begin quietly, show up differently for everyone, and unfold over time rather than in one clear moment.
Instead of guessing, try a simple practical approach this week: start noticing patterns and gathering a few clues about what’s changing.
- Track what’s different – Make a quick note of anything new over the past few months-even things that seem unrelated. Patterns are what matter. Pay attention to changes in sleep, mood, energy, cycle timing or body temperature.
- Focus on life stage, not just age – Perimenopause can start years before periods stop. Ask yourself: Has my cycle shifted? Have I had any treatments that could affect hormones? Do these symptoms feel new for me?
- Consider your family pattern – Family history isn’t a rule, but it can be helpful. If you can, ask relatives when they noticed changes and what they experienced-it may give you useful context.
- Ask someone you trust – Sometimes others notice changes before we do. Ask a partner, friend or family member if they’ve seen anything different and list for specific examples.
- Decide what comes next – After a week of paying attention, you’ll likely have a clearer picture. You might keep tracking, read more or talk with a healthcare provider – especially if symptoms are starting to affect your daily life.
You don’t need to figure it all out at once. The goal is simply to move from “maybe” to a better understanding of what your body is telling you.
Good Health to You All,
Karen Giblin
