Dear Red Hot Mamas,

Each month I read your newsletter. I finally have enough nerve to write to you about my concern. I am 52 and have vision changes and dry eyes. Hope you can provide some insight to what is happening to me. Thank you.

Laurel

Dear Laurel,

Thank you for writing to us and reading our newsletter. First, it is important for you to get your eyes examined regularly and especially if you begin having any vision problems. Or, if you have a family history of eye problems, hypertension, or diabetes.

It is not unusual that you notice vision changes as you age. Typically, it is the lose of being able to read clearly small print. Many people will need reading glasses, or bifocals or progressive lenses. There is also an increase in dry eyes. Our tear glands cannot make enough tears, or they may even produce poor quality tears. Over-the counter artificial tears that lubricate the eye may be helpful.

Your doctor may also prescribe different types of medication depending on your condition.

Some self-help measures you can do for yourself is:

  • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from sun, wind, and dry air.
  • Use a humidifier which will help keep the air in your home and office moist.
  • Eat a diet rich in omega 3-fatty acids and vitamin A.
  • Take breaks at your computer and give your eyes a rest.
  • Avoid smoking.
  • Stay away from pollen which can make your symptoms more severe
  • Make an appointment with an ophthalmologist as this specialist is knowledgeable in unique eye changes that occur during menopause.
