Dear Red Hot Mamas,

I am 54 and I am disturbed because I am having hair loss. Why could this be happening now? I appreciate Red Hot Mamas very much. Thank you for helping me understand this better.

Michelle

Dear Michelle,

There are several reasons that women lose their hair. One reason is genetics. Unlike hair loss in men, women’s hair loss if more distributed rather than in men who have a bald spot or receding hairline. There are other reasons such as stressful events, psychological and physical distress often can be a culprit.  In addition, the following can contribute to hair loss: underactive and overactive imbalances of the thyroid; nutritional deficiencies – shortages of vitamins and other nutrients, harsh hair styling or treatments – chemical treatments, braids can cause breakage and hair loss, and autoimmune diseases can attack hair follicles. It is important to discuss these factors with your clinician to determine the cause and get treatment recommendations.

Hope this is of help to you.
