“Summer afternoon—summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language”.
~Henry James
Dear Red Hot Mamas,
Well, our summer months are almost coming to an end. Many of us have enjoyed the month of August’s sunny skies, long days of sunlight and rising temperatures. Some fortunate women may have even had the opportunity to sit by a breezy seashore under a beach umbrella. Even though I have not had that opportunity, I’ve still enjoyed this summer.
I typically feel healthier in the summer. For one reason is that I enjoy the abundance of fruits and vegetable that are available for us. It really helps to enable us to eat those five portions of fruits and vegetables portion per day! Fresh fruits can help you survive and thrive. Summer fruits give you energy and nutrients and help cool you down and stay hydrated. And they help to boost our immune system which may help to warn off chronic diseases. So, I encourage you, if you haven’t already done so, to take a trip to a local farm for some fresh, local fruits while they are still available this summer.
And in the summer, I’m also inclined to drink far more water. Water is vital to improving our health. Drinking more water in the summer helps flush out toxins in the body. It also helps to promote digestion and may even help with weight loss.
Sunlight can help boost vitamin D. When the sun’s ultraviolet rays hit the skin, a reaction takes place that enables skin cells to manufacture vitamin D. Vitamin D is vital for building strong bones in our bodies. Of course, too much sun exposure can be dangerous. I hope that you have been diligent about applying sunscreen to sun exposed areas and you have been wearing protective clothes especially if you are outdoors for a prolonged time. Sunlight also boosts my enthusiasm to get out and exercise which is a great incentive to get back into shape to comfortably wear those summer clothes.
If you are a summer lover, like me, you might be sad about it coming to an end. But if you are a summer hater, you are probably antsy to get done with it and move on already.
So, in closing, I hope that you all have had an awesome summer. And I hope that you have exciting new things on the horizon as we enter the autumn months ahead.
Good Health to You All,
Karen Giblin
