Dear Red Hot Mamas,

I am 54 and have not had a period for almost two years. Last week, I noticed some light vaginal bleeding. Is this part of menopause, or should I be concerned? Thank you for any information you can provide.

Shannon

Dear Shannon,

Once you have gone 12 months without a period, you are considered postmenopausal. Bleeding after menopause is not something to ignore—even if it is light spotting and happens only once.

There can be several reasons for postmenopausal bleeding, including vaginal dryness and thinning of the tissues, polyps, infection, or medication. In some cases, however, it can be a sign of a more serious uterine condition.

There is no reason to panic, but there is every reason to call your healthcare provider. Let them know when the bleeding began, how heavy it was, whether it has happened again, and if you have any other symptoms, such as pelvic pain or unusual discharge.

The bottom line: any bleeding after menopause should be checked out. Getting answers quickly is the best way to protect your health—and provide peace of mind.
