Dear Red Hot Mamas,
I have been in menopause for six years now and I am feeling quite lonely. The reason I am writing is to get your opinion as to whether I should get a dog. Are there any health benefits to get a dog? I am considering adopting a dog from my local shelter. I know this is a difficult question I am posing for you, but perhaps a dog would take my mind of the symptoms I am having with my menopause. Thank you for your help.
Lauren
Dear Lauren,
Certainly, a dog may help you feel better if you are lonely. It will provide companionship and unconditional love. It also may help you cope with stress, improve your mood and sense of well-being. Regular walking or playing with a dog can decrease blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and triglyceride levels. Having a dog can also open more opportunities for you to meet and socialize with new people who also have a pet.
So, I think you are on the right path in possibly becoming a dog owner. Look beyond the dog’s cuteness and focus on the health benefits that you will reap from owning a dog. And, if you are not ready to adopt a dog, you may offer to walk your neighbor’s dog or even donate your time at a local animal shelter. Even short interactions with dogs may reap some health rewards. Good luck in your pursuit of the finding a furry friend.
