Dear Red Hot Mamas,
Now that I am 53, my doctor insists on my having a hearing test. When and how often is it really needed?
Nancy
Dear Nancy,
Thank you for writing to Red Hot Mamas. It is important that your doctor checks how well you recognize sounds at various volumes and frequencies. Your doctor is checking for hearing loss which occurs with increased age. You asked how often to have your hearing checked, and until the age of 50 it is necessary to check it every 10 years. However, starting at age 50, it is important to have it checked at least every 3 years. If you have been exposed to loud noises that are job related or have had frequent ear infections these factors may increase your risk of hearing loss. So, it may be recommended that you have a yearly hearing test. We hope this information helps.
