Dear Ask the Experts,

I’m 50 years old and am starting to develop dark hair on my chin and upper lip. Why is this happening?

Anna

Dear Anna,

If you are of Mediterranean origin this might be the reason. It may occur due to hereditary reasons. So, you might just have to thank your grandmother for the eyebrow growing on your chin.

However, it may be caused by a hormonal imbalance (more androgens and less estrogen). You should check with your doctor to see if these hormonal changes are related to menopause, or this extra hair growth is due from other causes.

Some suggestions to get rid of unwanted hair include: bleaching- if it is just the darkness that bothers you, perhaps bleaching is an option. But be careful when using bleaching creams, especially if you have sensitive skin. Waxing is another option. A visit once a month to a good aesthetician may be helpful. Plucking is another option to consider. But you might first have to invest in a good magnifying mirror! There are also laser treatments that are quite helpful, but these treatments are expensive and you need to find a qualified doctor who performs them regularly. There is also a prescription drug available which your doctor can prescribe that slows facial hair growth.
