Some women with menopausal health problems never speak up about them as they are too embarrassed to bring up their questions to their doctors; or they think they will be viewed as wanting pity; or that they may be made fun of and ostracized about sharing openly their feelings about their symptoms. As a result, they may feel confused, isolated and alone.
From a patient’s perspective, I get very upset when I visit a doctor who doesn’t looks into my eyes and answers my questions. I’ve also been to doctors that are totally distracted by the keyboard on their computers. Some doctors have left me in the examining room far too long behind closed doors, I just wanted to leave the office. I’ve been frustrated at doctors who weren’t able to listen to me.
As women, we need to speak up and get the respect we are entitled to at menopause and in the doctor’s office. I believe doctors should applaud women who are brave enough to ask them questions. I’m totally weary of doctors who dismiss menopausal health concerns. Just remember, being inquisitive and asking a doctor questions, does not make you a difficult patient. In fact, it makes you an educated health care consumer. Your well-being depends on you watching out for yourself and getting answers to taking care of yourself at menopause and beyond. If you feel you have the best doctor in the world, show gratitude to them. Let them know how thankful you are of their services; and how appreciative you feel in the way they listen and provide the best care they can give. Those doctors should be applauded!
If you are looking for a new doctor, or switching for one reason or another, there are a series of questions to ask and steps to follow to ensure your choice is the right one. Read our article on Choosing the Right Doctor at Menopause. You deserve the best medical care.
This month, Red Hot Mamas hospitals, in partnership with Red Hot Mamas North America and with support provided by Novo Nordisk, a global healthcare company, will host Get Your Groove Back events. Get Your Groove Back will address the real-life challenges associated with menopause. Women all across the country are living with the uncomfortable secret that they suffer from vaginal symptoms related to menopause, and few women ask for help in managing their concerns. As many as 75 percent of postmenopausal women may experience conditions that impact body image and self- esteem, and organizers hope to clarify that vaginal discomfort that disrupts your daily life is not normal, and may indicate that something is wrong.
Health education, question-and-answer sessions, and engaging activities will be woven throughout the two hour events to emphasize awareness of symptoms and treatment options for menopausal-related concerns. Hope to see you there!
Following is the confirmed schedule for the 6 Get Your Groove Back Events:
