Dear Red Hot Mamas,
I have always given my doctor a detailed medical history, but I am wondering should I have genetic testing as well? Thank you for all the help that you provide.
Kate
Dear Kate,
If you are considering genetic testing, the first thing to do is to undergo genetic counseling. Genetic counselors will analyze your family history and evaluate your risk of developing or passing along an inherited disease. Genetic counselors can also review signs, symptoms and causes of a condition, review genetic testing options, and go over treatment options.
Genetic tests are for people whose family history may put them at high risk of having a genetic defect. These tests can uncover a disease or a tendency to develop certain conditions and it can lead to close relatives getting tested as well. However, genetic testing is not recommended for everyone.
Here are some resources for locating a genetics professional in your community are available online:
- The National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) offers a searchable directory of genetic counselors in the United States and Canada. You can search by location, name, area of practice/specialization, and/or ZIP Code.
- The American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) provides a searchable directory of certified genetic counselors worldwide. You can search by practice area, name, organization, or location.
- The American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) has a searchable database of medical genetics clinic services in the United States.
We hope this information is useful for you.
