On Tuesday, July 19, 2011, Woman’s Hospital hosted its first Red Hot Mamas event at the G. Chastaine Flynt Memorial Library in Flowood, MS. Forty-four women attended the seminar to talk about menopause. The topic of the night was “What’s Happening to Me? My sleep, My moods, Myself.”
Chris Wiggs, MD, an obstetrician/gynecologist with Jackson Healthcare for Women, was the host for the night. Dr. Wiggs graduated and did his fellowship at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS. He is on staff at Woman’s Hospital and has been on the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology since January 2004.
The event allowed women to be in a fun, safe, comfortable environment to discuss and learn more about menopause. Menopause has always been a “behind the door” conversation. Now, Woman’s Hospital is opening the door and offering expert medical advice and guidance to help guide women through the transition from one stage of their lives to another. This program is designed to help prepare and educate women on recognizing the symptoms of menopause and teaching them how to effectively manage these related changes.
But what’s an event without a little fun and prizes. On all the tables for the women were little prizes, a pink bag that contained Bath and Body Works products and a manicure set. Woman’s Hospital also gave away several door prizes. The prizes consisted of a Red Hot Mamas t-shirt, cook book and a CD. Every woman who attended the event also received a free three month membership to Fitness Lady, a local fitness facility located in Ridgeland, MS.
During the event there was a time for members to participate in a question and answer session. They were able to ask questions about menopause and have the doctor right there to answer. This also helped other women who may not have thought of a question or did not want to ask, but wanted to know the answer. Women committed saying, “I really enjoyed the program. It enlightened me. It was very informative and educational.”
Sherry Pitts, Chief Executive Officer of Woman’s Hospital, said “This important transition that occurs in every woman’s life can be a very uncertain and often frightening time for those that haven’t received the right amount of support.” “Our physicians will help to translate the recent medical information on menopause into information that is meaningful for them. And, our staff will be there every step of the way as a resource to help with the physical and emotional changes faced to some degree by every woman.”
Woman’s Hospital encourages all women to join and attend our seminars to learn how to recognize the symptoms of menopause and how to manage them so they can look forward to and enjoy this phase of their life.
Red Hot Mamas is a free event hosted by Woman’s Hospital and we urge other women to join and learn. The next event will be held on September 19, 2011 at Fitness Lady in Ridgeland, MS. The event will be focused on “Staying Fit, Strong and Fabulous: Nutrition, Exercise and Weight Management.”
