The FDA just approved the first non-hormonal therapy for the treatment of moderate to severe hot flashes. For many women, menopause may not be their favorite phase of life due to hot flashes. For those of you who haven’t experienced hot flashes, let me attempt to describe them. They usually happen suddenly. You feel an intense warmth throughout the upper part of the body and they are often accompanied by flushing of the neck and face and sweating. Chills may follow accompanied by palpitations, irritability and feelings of anxiety. Hot flashes may cause discomfort, embarrassment and may cause loss of sleep. Approximately 75% of women have hot flashes at some point during their menopausal years. Hot flashes sometimes persist 5 to 10 years after menopause (the permanent cessation of menstruation).
On a personal note, at menopause, I certainly did not feel “cool as a cucumber”. In fact, I had molten monster attacks of hot flashes where I felt like I was ready to spontaneously combust at any given moment. So, to all of you red hot mamas out there, who feel like you are perpetually engulfed in flames, I know exactly how you are feeling.
So what’s a girl to do if she’s suffering from hot flash meltdowns? It’s important to talk to your health care practitioner to find out how to handle hot flashes. It’s important for you to understand how menopause can affect your body and emotions. Discuss all your options and how to make the right lifestyle choices for a healthier life at menopause. And, in November, there’s one more treatment option available which has just been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. It is the first non-hormonal therapy for the treatment of moderate to severe hot flashes. The product’s name is “Brisdelle”. Here are is the latest press release on Brisdelle.
