A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of your eye affecting more than 24.4 million Americans age 40 and older. By age 75, approximately half of all Americans have cataracts. (https://www.nei.nih.gov/eyedata/cataract) Some people have described it a bit like seeing through a frosty or clouded up window. Clouded vision caused by cataracts can make it more difficult to read and drive a car (especially at night).
Most cataracts develop slowly and don’t disturb your eyesight early on. But with time, cataracts will eventually interfere with your vision. At first, eyeglasses may help you deal with cataracts but eventually you may need surgery if impaired vision interferes with you usual activities. Fortunately, cataract surgery is generally a safe, effective procedure.
