Dear Red Hot Mamas Experts,

I am about 1 1/2 years into menopause, are there any supplements I need to be taking? I have hot flashes, weight gain around my tummy and headaches. I need some relief!

Thank you,

P

Dear P,

Women in menopause should always consult with their clinicians before taking vitamin supplements. Don’t just assume that if you buy them over the counter that they are entirely safe. Some supplements may interfere with prescribed medications you may be taking and may have adverse affects. However, even if you think you are eating right, there may be a need for extra supplementation of vitamin D and calcium. Most women also benefit from taking a simple multivitamin per day. But, again, check with your clinician first.

75-85% of women experience hot flashes during the menopause transition. Headaches are three times more common in women than in men. This may be resulting from hormonal changes that occur at menopause. Red Hot Mamas advocates keeping a diary of all your symptoms logging in the frequency, severity and how your symptoms are affecting your quality of life and sharing this with your clinician. This will provide helpful information to help ascertain causes, triggers and help your clinician in recommending treatment options.

Good Health to You!
