Dear Red Hot Mamas Experts,

Why am I itching so much? How can I find relief?

Thank you,

J

Dear J,

There are many causes of itching (medical conditions and environmental) which may play a role in your feeling itchy. It’s a good idea to discuss this with your doctor.

Itching can be due to hormonal changes that occur at menopause. Estrogen stimulates the formation of collagen and oils and when our estrogen levels lower during the menopause transition some women develop dry skin appears coupled with itching.

Avoid taking hot steamy showers as it will certainly dry your skin out. Always use a sunscreen to protect your skin and cover up all those sun exposed skin areas which dry out fast. Eat essential fatty acids – omega-3s that are found in fatty fish like salmon and sardines, flaxseeds, and soy. They will help your skin feel hydrated. Stay away from using deodorant type soaps which will leave your skin more itchy and dry. And, hydrate by drinking lots of water. Last but not least, if you are smoking stop as it can prematuraly dry your skin.

Good Health to You!
