Dear Red Hot Mamas,

I seem to get fatigued since hitting menopause. I am 56 years old. Can you explain any of this to me. I read your newsletter each month and love it. Thank you for your help.

Janis

Dear Janis,

Thank you for writing to Red Hot Mamas.

Janis, when you go through menopause your body makes less of some important hormones (estrogen and progesterone). This can cause night sweats, hot flashes, and trouble sleeping, which make you feel very tired leaving your drained all day. You might also feel tired because these hormone changes affect your energy and mood, and your body has to work harder to deal with stress. Things like a slow thyroid or low iron can add to your tiredness, too. Other things that make it worse are not eating well, not moving much, feeling stressed, or missing important vitamins (e.g., B12).

To feel better, try to keep a regular, cool, and calm bedtime, take short walks every day, practice deep breathing to relax, eat balanced meals, and talk to your doctor to check for other health issues or prescribed medical treatments that might help.

Hope this is of some help to you.
