Dear Red Hot Mamas,
I would appreciate it if you could provide me with some information. I am 45 and have always had heavy painful periods and pelvic pain. I know that my sister Kathy has endometriosis, but I do not know if I have it or not. Can you explain what the symptoms of endometriosis are? Thank you.
Paula
Dear Paula,
Endometriosis affects about 10% of women. Common symptoms are painful periods, pelvic pain, pain with sex, pain with bowel movements, bladder pain and infertility. Other symptoms which sometimes occur are fatigue, diarrhea, constipation, bloating or nausea. These symptoms are more common before or during the menstrual periods. You should make an appointment with your doctor. Your doctor may make a diagnosis based on your symptoms, or possibly an ultrasound, MRI which may detect endometriosis. Factors that might contribute to the likelihood of endometriosis are menstrual pain since your first period, heavy bleeding and a family history of endometriosis. It’s important to have a discussion with your doctor also because there may be other potential causes of your heavy painful periods and pelvic pain other than the possibility of endometriosis.
Thank you for writing to Red Hot Mamas
