Dear Red Hot Mamas,

You are a great resource for women. Can you please provide me some information as to how I can beat the effects of memory lapses and the brain fog that I am feeling since my menopause has begun? Any information you can provide would be helpful.

Thank you.

Carla

Dear Carla,

Thank you for using us a resource for your menopause. Sometimes menopause can be a difficult and confusing time for women and we are happy to share our insights and wisdom to you.

Here are some helpful hints that may help combat that brain fog:

Learn to chill out, keep it simple, and not tackle too much at one time. Learn to say no to things that totally exhaust you or drain your brain power. Taking on too much can be a drain on your energy and can cause forgetfulness.

Making lists and checking them twice can help. Write down things that must be done, but don’t forget to prioritize them. This might help you focus and not feel overwhelmed.

Get enough sleep (at least seven hours). You concentrate more when you’re thoroughly rested.

Keep a calendar and record your appointments, birthdays and other important dates.

Watch what you eat. Avoid excessive sugar which can make you feel tired and create brain fog. And, limit your caffeine intake. Yes, you may feel hyped up after eating or drinking caffeine (coffee, tea, soda, chocolate), however they also may make it hard for you to sleep.

Place things in the exact same place (car keys, eyeglasses, telephone, handbag).

We hope these simple things help you cope better with brain fog.
