Dear Red Hot Mamas Experts,
I’m confused because I have been told I need a hysterectomy. My question is are there different types? I most appreciate your help.
Donna
Dear Donna,
Yes, there are different types of hysterectomies which include:
– Partial or subtotal. This procedure removes the uterus but leaves the cervix, ovaries, and fallopian tubes in place.
– Total or complete hysterectomy refers to a procedure that removes the uterus and the cervix but not the ovaries and the fallopian tubes.
-Radical is a procedure that removes the uterus, the upper part of the vagina, the cervix, supporting tissues, one or both ovaries, and the fallopian tubes.
Its important for you to get a second, or even a third opinion regarding the need for a hysterectomy. And always look for a surgeon who does minimally invasive hysterectomies. You should discuss with your surgeon all your options.
Thank you for writing to Red Hot Mamas.
