Dear Red Hot Mamas,

Last year as winter approached I began to feel more tired and my mood changed.  So, as these next months are approaching can you explain what might be happening.  My spouse says I might have seasonal affective disorder.  Please offer me some suggestions.  I appreciate it.  Thank you.

Wanda

Dear Wanda,

You should talk to your doctor and he/she will diagnose whether you have seasonal affective disorder or not.  Some of the symptoms include:

–  Lethargy and fatigue

–  Food cravings for sugar, starch and weight gain

–  Irritability and anxiety

–  Avoidance of social activities

Some ways you can help yourself is to increase your exposure to light and spend at least 30 minutes per day out in the sunlight.  You also should keep your home and office well lighted.  There are other treatment options which your doctor should discuss with you which may include counseling or medications.  Hope this is of help to you and thank you for writing to us.
