Dear Red Hot Mamas,

My weight is up I am told because I am in perimenopause. My question to you all is what can I do when I get snack attacks each day at 4 pm? Please give me some suggestions. I love your website and newsletter. Thank you.

Sarah

Dear Sarah,

Thank you for writing to us. It is common to have snack attacks. You might want to keep it simple by carrying nuts or a piece of fruit with you went these attacks occur. Protein bars are also helpful, but don’t go overboard with eating them especially if they are filled with a lot of processed ingredients in them. Other things you could consider eating are:

  • Hard-boiled eggs
  • Celery with peanut butter
  • Turkey or chicken slices with avocado
  • Whole grain crackers and a slice of cheese
  • Apple slices with peanut butter
  • Carrots and hummus
  • Handful of raw nuts
  • Yogurt
  • Fresh fruit
  • Pretzels
  • Air-popped popcorn
  • Glass of low-fat milk

Drink plenty of water. And certainly, don’t keep conventional snacks such as candy or chips in your house. Try to plan by having healthy snack choices on hand.
