Dear Red Hot Mamas,

I know that every one of us probably at some point in our lives will get headaches. I am one of those people who on occasion get them. Luckily for me they are mild and not too debilitating. Could you please tell me some lifestyle measures I can take to prevent them? Thanks so much for your worthy information. I love your newsletter!

Kate

Dear Kate,

Our lifestyle and even the environment can trigger headaches. Also, some foods which we eat, weather changes, altitude changes, stress and altered sleep habits.

While a healthy diet and having a healthy lifestyle is important, it is just as important to have knowledge of just what may be triggering your headaches.

For instance, common foods such as cheese or wine may contain substances, such as tyramine, that are known triggers of headaches. Also, foods which contain MSG, preservatives and flavorings may also be a culprit for developing a headache. Restricting the intake of these items may be effective in preventing headaches.

Let’s tackle some health style issues that trigger headaches. For instance, your posture while walking and sitting; grinding your teeth at night may also be culprits. So, it’s possible to look at those things and make changes. Perhaps it may mean changing the chair you sit in at your office, or even changing the type of shoes you are wearing.

It might also be a good idea for you to keep a diary to track the frequency of your headaches and the possible triggers that could have caused the headache. You should keep track of the hours that you have slept, the meals you have eaten, the physical exercise you have done and how you have handled stress. Please share this diary with your doctor. Your doctor can then assess whether you need additional treatment for your headaches.
