Dear Red Hot Mamas- April 2020

Dear Red Hot Mamas,

At this point, in all of our lives, we’ve all been in a constant state of anxiety as each new day is filled with the COVID-19 pandemic news. I, myself, wonder how we all will come back from this brink of the apocalypse.

As an extrovert, I am truly missing the gatherings of people and experiencing the warmth of their exuberant smiles. The digital connections, we now all seem to be adhering too – the texting, the funny emoji’s, just isn’t cutting it for me. I guess that I am not truly wired for social distancing, nor for the abundance of digital connections with people. Perhaps the strangeness I’m feeling about texting may be due to my age. I know that this is not optimal, nor sustainable, for a person like me. I’m just not wired to feel so alone.

I also miss the hugs and handshakes. My father, may he rest in peace, knew how extroverted I was. He also witnessed my being an elected public official which he was ever so proud of. But, he always said “Have someone you admire evaluate your handshake”. He always suggested to me to put out my hand, provide a firm handshake, look into others eyes, smile, and always exude confidence in myself. I always did this without much thought. Now, sadly, handshakes may never happen again.

This pandemic has altered our lives and has radically transformed the way we will be interacting with one another in the days ahead. Our world has changed. The best course of action to slow the spread is to follow the instructions by medical experts to continue engaging in social distancing. So please take all the necessary precautions and stay safe.

I hope that the threshold of all of our futures will be full of happier and healthier times ahead. Try to awake each new morning and remind yourself what you are grateful for. Think about your health and all the love you have in your lives. You will be amazed at how happier you will feel.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me personally, and/or to other Red Hot Mamas on our community forum on www.inspire.com. For obvious reasons, there will be no Red Hot Mamas meetings in hospitals until the situation gets back to normal. But we are ready in the future to restart new Red Hot Mamas programs for you as soon as the situation gets back to normalcy.

In closing, let’s all have hope, stay connected, and please stay home and stay safe.

Good Health to You All,

Karen Giblin
